Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World

The seasonal game drop for Minecraft has landed — and it includes the first new weapon added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is finally here and it has the potential to change how you play Minecraft, especially if you love chaos.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mounts of Mayhem update also introduces a host of fresh elements and enhancements related to riding animals in the game. That focus made the spear the ideal addition for this update, as the creators had already known it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we desired a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your companions on horseback, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an offensive action perfectly suited for it.

"[Jousting on horses is a major applications for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer continues. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the thrust, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you couch your lance and get more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] ideal for mounted duels."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The wild enjoyment can extend beyond there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the elytra and going out and making some real mayhem," she suggests.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now real, and it deserves to be an competitive event without delay.

Another key feature in this fresh content is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the seashells found in-game for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your oxygen levels, so there's no need to return to the surface for a breath.

The rest of the additions are largely things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a zombie Nautilus popping up in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in dispatch the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a blowfish.

"We've long considered this problem on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the perfect moment to also introduce something for aquatic environments," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a number of concepts for aquatic rides that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked compelling, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."

She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you venture in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a analogous exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can cross bodies of water while riding a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the best defense it is worthy of.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

Overall, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a considerable upgrade. Combine that with the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mayhem Mounts content drop is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
