FAI Approves Motion Calling for Uefa Ban on Israel
The Football Association of Ireland has given the green light to present a official proposal to Uefa, calling for the exclusion of Israeli football from all European team and national competitions.
Grounds for the Recommended Suspension
This motion, that had been put forward by Dublin club Bohemians, cited alleged violations by the Israel Football Association of two key Uefa statutes.
- Inability to apply and uphold an proper policy against racism.
- Establishment of football teams in disputed territories lacking the consent of the Palestrian FA.
Ballot Results and Future Actions
As stated in an announcement from the FAI, the resolution was backed by 74 votes, with 7 against and 2 abstentions.
The association intends to officially present this request to the UEFA's decision-making body, seeking the prompt ban of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.
In an extraordinary general meeting of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was put to members. It was approved by a large margin.
Earlier European Deliberations
Uefa had earlier put on hold plans to exclude Israel at the end of September, following the announcement of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the area.
Although they never publicly stated considering an special session on the matter, preparations were believed to be quite advanced.
International Context
The FAI move comes after similar demands in September from the heads of Turkish and Norwegian football associations for banning Israel from international competition.
Those requests were made after United Nations experts asked Fifa and Uefa to suspend the Israeli FA, citing a UN commission of inquiry report that accused the country of acts of genocide during the war in Gaza.
Israel has rejected these claims and labeled the report as scandalous.
Possible Consequences
Should European football's authority decide to suspend Israel, it would probably create tension with the US administration – co-hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which is firmly against such an measure.
Even though the European body has the power to suspend Israeli teams from European competitions, it may not be able to prevent them from competing in World Cup qualifiers, which falls under Fifa.
