Doris Makes Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Returning manager Andy Farrell has included captain Doris in his Irish team for the fall Tests, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions match against Australia in July.

Northern province player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are not included because of injury, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new player in the 34-man group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says new Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

After playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming URC match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen as the coach opting against calling up Leinster's Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started two of his province's three United Rugby Championship matches this season and featured in Ireland A's loss by England in Bristol earlier this year.

McCarthy was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a cap.

Munster second row Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and experienced Northern province second row Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for Doris should the captain fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in the capital on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
